Uffizi Gallery
The Uffizi Gallery is one of largest and best known art museums in the world and holds many priceless pieces of art. It contains more than 100 rooms. The building which houses the artwork was originally built as offices, 'uffizi' in Italian. Construction began in 1560 and was completed in 1581. The artwork was the private collection of the Medici and was eventually donated to the city of Florence. It was opened to the public in 1765 and formally became a museum in 1865. In 1993, a car bomb explosion, attributed to the Sicilian Mafia, killed five people, damaged part of the museum, destroyed five pieces of art and damaged thirty more. In 2016, the year we visited, the Uffizi had 4.39 million visitors.
I am including a large selection of photographs. I doubt we saw everything in the museum, and I know we didn't take photos of everything we saw, but this will give you a nice tour of the art collection.
