Cerro Chato
Cerro Chato is an extinct volcano. It is very close to Arenal Volcano. It last erupted 3,500 years ago. Cerro Chato is 3,740 feet tall. The lagoon in the caldera is 1,600 feet across. This was one of our most challenging hikes. The trail virtually disappeared and turned into a muddy path for rainwater runoff. It was very steep and very difficult to climb. I told Danny that if it started raining, we were in serious trouble. I found out later that although we came across 6 or 8 people along the way, access to Cerro Chato had been closed back in 2017. I think we used the backdoor.
